Day 2 – Pa’ Lungan to Long Rebun

Happy Birthday Rian! What would you like for your 48th birthday? How about a day of trekking in deep jungle; starting with a knee-deep wade through water and buffalo faeces, and ending in a 15 year old shack in the middle of nowhere? Perfect. Thanks very much.

Long Rebun was around 5 hours from Pa’ Lungan and party of 8 set off late after finishing off the previous night’s birthday feast. The trail was now much thinner under the canopy which meant we had protection from the fierce some sun. This luxury came with a lot rougher terrain however and spent the following hours staring at the ground to negotiate roots and deadfall that seemed determined to block our route.

Amidst Phillip’s constant apologies (for things like ‘mud’, ‘roots’ and ‘smoke breaks’) we saw massive forests of bamboo, Silverleaf monkeys and a stunning Agatis tree whose circumference was easily 5 meters. Sights like this took our minds off our aching feet and in the late afternoon, we arrived at our hotel – a modest shelter which provided just enough room for our party to hammock up.

We rapidly collected water, cooked our noodles and headed to bed in preparation for the days of hell of that were due to commence.
